The Script

The script of The Lion King (1994) was inspired by William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the Biblical stories of Moses and Joseph, and a 1988 concept "King of the Kalahari". All drawing back to the plot lines of an exiled prince coming back to rule.Visit Floger Shakespeare Library!

The Directors

The directors of The Lion King were Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. Roger Allers was an important figure in Disney animation and he passed away January 2026. Allers directed other productions such as Open Season, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Minkoff has thus far directed productions such as Stuart Little, It's Roger Rabbit, and Howard. Both of these gentlemen co-directed The Lion King.

The Acting

Jeremy Irons played Scar, James Earl Jones played Mufasa, Matthew Broderick played Simba, and Robert Guillaume played Rafiki. There were many other notable names and the casting was phenomenally done by Brian Chavanne. He has also casted for Pocahontas, James and the Giant Peach, and Anastacia.

The Sound

The score of The Lion King was composed by the famous Hans Zimmer with the help of Lebo M, who aided Zimmer with authentic African vocal arrangements. This score was an Oscar-winning piece that blended the orchestra of Zimmer with the Zulu chants of Lebo M.

The Animation

The animation was created by a team of Disney animators. They blended the traditional hand-drawn animation with 3D computer technology as well for the more complex scenes. There was a supervisor for each major character and effects. For instance, Ruben Aino was the supervisor for the animation of Adult Simba and David A. Bossert over the effects animation.

The Impact

The Lion King at the time of its release made approximately $968 million when it was produced on only $45 million. It is the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of all time. There has been countless re-runs and remakes of this original film, even famously performed on Broadway. Apart from the numbers and the new productions, the fact that we are still watching and talking about The Lion King today speaks volumes to its importance and impact.
